You want to be vegan but you “have no discipline for being vegan”?

First of all: I thought about making some posts about the most common reasons people bring up for not being vegan. And I’m talking about people that actually think being vegan is the right choice, understand what it’s about and who admire vegans as I was one of those myself. So I’m not talking about reasons like “humans are naturally carnivores”. 😀

So, this one is about discipline.

I always though vegans need a lot of discipline to resist all the delicious “temptations” that are out there. I thought I could never do it because it’s too hard to say goodbye to all the stuff I ate before. And it is true: I am not a person with the most discipline when it comes to eating. I mean, I didn’t eat crap before becoming vegan, in fact I was eating quite healthy with lots of fruit, vegetables, oatmeal,.. well, healthy for an omnivor diet when I still thought milk is good for you. 😉 And I guess I had a little advantage in adopting to a healthy vegan diet because of that. But I couldn’t do things like cutting out lactose or gluten for a week just to try if it changes something for example. And I didn’t really want to because I was quite crazy about discipline in eating/not eating when I was younger (the usual struggles of a young woman..) and I didn’t want to get this unhealthy relationship with food back again.

Aurora Borealis.

During my months abroud in Sweden I decided to go on a trip to lapland with some other people. In winter semester the university organizes a big trip for all students who want to go but we were there in summer semester. We didn’t want to miss going there since being in Sweden anyway so we booked a guided tour with Scanbalt ExperienceAt first we thought about going there on our own but I think it’s quite hard in Lapland without a guide and with just a few days time to see as much as possible. It was quite cheap for such a tour as well and at first we were a little sceptical but everything worked out just fine.

A capital that doesn’t feel like a capital.

When I was in Sweden I went to Denmark one day with a small group of people from university. We went there with two lecturers who know the city very well and who could show us a lot of places. They could tell us some historical facts about them as well. From Kristianstad in Sweden it is only about one hour with the train to get there. I was really excited to cross the Øresund Bridge to Denmark. It’s a very special bridge that is half under the water and it separates Denmark from Sweden.

Staying positive can be hard sometimes.

I just got another refusal for a job I applied for so I start to get a little frustrated. I know I shouldn’t because this doesn’t make anything better and I should stay motivated. But this was a job I really wanted to do so it’s easier said than done. I even called them to get a feedback and to ask if there really is no change to get an invitation for an interview because I told myself not to give up that easily anymore. (Edit: Ok, they refused me because they need someone right now and not in a… Weiterlesen »Staying positive can be hard sometimes.

Jag talar lite Svenska.

Yes, I talk a little Swedish but it’s really just a tiny bit. I went to Sweden for 5 months last year for a semester abroad (with Erasmus programme) and there I also had a Swedish course at university. It’s sad you unlearn languages if you don’t use them regularly.

So, Sweden.. I really love this country. I’d never been there before but I was always fascinated by the Northern countries. I wasn’t too far North though. My university was in Kristianstad and that’s also where I lived. Kristianstad is a cute little town. I stayed in a hostel for students and shared a room with a French girl. And it really was just a big room with a small kitchen corner and a tiny bathroom. So there was no privacy because we didn’t even have separate rooms to sleep. I never thought I could stand something like this for a long time ’cause I’m a person that needs a lot of alone time but you can accustom to anything if there’s no other option. 😉 I just couldn’t afford another accomodation because Sweden is very expensive.Weiterlesen »Jag talar lite Svenska.

How to start running and stay motivated.

They say money can’t buy happiness but it can buy running shoes and that’s kind of the same thing.

I’ve been running for almost 4 years now and I normally run about 3-4 times a week, sometimes less, sometimes more. I usually run between 8-10km (~10km/h). I just wanted to share some tips with you because I know how hard it can be to motivate yourself. I also want to point out that I’m not the fittest, most motivated, positive thinking,.. person around and that I was super unsporty when I started.. So if I can do it, anyone can. 😀

No formaggio, please.

Finally a more current travel report..

In April this year I went to Sicily with my boyfriend for a few days – my first vegan vacation!
I was a little worried about getting vegan food there but it was absolutely no problem. In Italy you can always eat pasta with vegetable sauce, pizza without cheese, antipasti,.. You just have to make it clear to the waiters which can be a little tricky if you’re not talking any Italien, like me. So I just always said “no formaggio, no formaggio” and made funny gestures. 😀 So it really was no problem.

Why vegan?

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi

That’s why. I used to think that one single person doesn’t make a difference but I completely changed my way of thinking.

I’ve known for years that something went completely wrong in our world today. I knew about the suffering of the animals. I’ve never been someone who said “if you buy organic animal products it’s ok, it comes from happy animals”. I kept on eating everything anway because I was really good in suppressing these things (like so many people are..).

I even admired vegans but I said “I think it’s great but I could never do it myself”. Well, turned out I can.

No accommodation? No problem.

The first time (seems I had many first times within the last years 😉 ) I went on vacation without booking an accommodation was 2013 when I went to Tenerife with my boyfriend. Well, okay, we booked one but just for 2 days via airbnbWe stayed in Puerto de la Cruz for 2 days and I really enjoyed it because I had never lived in a big city like this before so it was really exciting to have a room right in the center. The only thing that was a little annoying was that it took such a long time to find a parking spot there. It’s said that about half of the people driving the car through the city are actually just searching for a free parking spot. 😀 In Puerto de la Cruz my boyfriend got himself a secondhand surfboard. I also wanted to have one but we couldn’t find a beginner board.

How my second time at the ocean made me a surfer.

Just kidding, it didn’t. 😀

Like I mentioned in my post about Portugal, I wanted to take surfing classes. So 2012 I went to Bretagne/France together with my boyfriend and we booked classes for beginners. I took two weeks, he took one. He already was able to surf but not that well so he decided it couldn’t harm to learn more about the right technique. I was quite happy because so I didn’t have to go there on my own with all my excitement. We stayed at a campground again but this time we had a small bungalow which was pretty cosy.. and cheap of course. We found it at Camping de la Torche.
