I wasn’t sure if this is actually worth a post but then I decided it is because: So many people complain about French fries being so unhealthy and having lots of calories and fat and that this is the reason they don’t eat them.
Good news: You do not have to deny yourself French fries! Potatoes themselves are actually a health food, full of good stuff such as vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin C and fiber. They also contain a variety of phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. At the same time they are low in calories and contain no cholesterol or fat.
French fries are only unhealthy when fried in a lot of oil. There is an easy way to make super healthy, low-fat and delicious fries yourself at home. In my opinion they even taste 100 times better than the frozen ones you can buy (and most people buy the frozen ones which kinda taste like cardboard to me..).
So, how do you make healthy fries at home? Easy:
Cut up your favourite kind of potatoes or sweet potatoes into fries, put them in a bowl and spice them with whatever you like. I like the combo of salt, garlic and pepper powder. After that you just put them in the oven on a baking sheet. I always put them on 200-220° and just check every now and then. As soon as they’re golden brown and soft on the inside, they’re ready to eat. It usually takes about 30 minutes, a little longer for sweet potatoes (also depends on what oven you use, of course). Tip: Adding a tiny bit of flour makes them crispier.
And they’re so diverse! You can eat them with ketchup, barbecue sauce, tahini, sweet tahini, guacamole,..
By the way: This doesn’t mean it’s not okay to eat super fatty and unhealthy French fries now and then, I do this as well when eating out. Often fries are the only available option (or lifesaver) for vegans in some places anyway.
